The Atlantic Star is one of five G4 class series combination roll-on/roll off container ships (ConRO) which are operated by Atlantic Container Line. The vessel is powered by a Wärtsilä 8RT-flex68D two-stroke diesel engine, which is under license from Hudong Heavy Machinery Company. The Atlantic Star has seven decks for Ro-Ro cargo alongside a 3,807 TEU capacity for containers. As opposed to regular ConRO structures, which load containers above-deck and Ro-Ro freight underneath with the superstructure situated aft, G4 vessels carry containers at the bow through the entire depth of the hull, with Ro-Ro cargo space amidships in and beneath the superstructure. On the Atlantic Star the Ro-Ro decks are higher (up to 7.4 meters) with fewer columns, enabling easier loading and discharge of oversized cargo. To maintain the best possible speed in North Atlantic weather conditions, a vertical stem bow was chosen, rather than the typical bulbous bow.
