The vessel Aqua Tromoy is currently moored in Duncan Bay, just north of Campbell River. The Polish built vessel, which was launched last year, can hold 3,000 cubic metres of water, the equivalent of eight Olympic-sized swimming pools. The ship provides a pest management strategy, as it can lift farmed salmon from their pens and bathe them in fresh water to remove pests such as sea lice. Before the “bath-water” is pumped back into the ocean, it is passed through filters to capture and retain any parasites. The diesel-powered Aqua Tromoy, also has an on-board water treatment process, while the engine system uses urea to reduce nitrogen oxide pollutants in exhaust gases. The ship has a live-aboard crew of nine, some of which were provided by local Vancouver company Canship Ugland.
